System Monitor

With System Monitor you can track the performance of either your computer, or your network. Each activity that you designate for monitoring is represented by a chart which is updated every five seconds. The bulk of the features are identical to those available in Windows 95. There has, however, been one important addition. If you select Edit/Add Item, you will see that there are extra items in the list, including Dial-Up Adapter. This could be used to monitor your modem and monitor all kinds of information, such as connection speed, or bytes collected per second. All you need to do is click on the Adapter and then choose the options you want to be graphed, bytes/second, packets dropped, etc. Then go to the View menu and Hide Toolbar. You now have a re-sizable set of graphs that will always sit on top so you can monitor as you browse. Why the connection properties displayed when you connect don't show this sort of information though is anyone's guess.
